Australian Ambassador’s Speaker Series 2012
I was excited to launch in 2011 the annual Ambassador’s Speaker Series. In 2012 I will again present several of Australia’s great thinkers, who will speak on issues of interest and importance both in the United States and Australia, such as the environment, science, health, culture and power relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
My Speaker Series is designed to continue the frank, full and fearless discussion I and my embassy colleagues enjoy with representatives from the US Administration, Congress, universities, think tanks, industry organisations and the general public. I look forward to broadening this discussion to include my Australian colleagues who have dedicated themselves to leading public policy issues that can be discussed, debated and advanced through a relationship as close and as important as ours is with the United States.
As a former political leader and academic I have engaged with many of Australia’s leading academics and experienced first-hand how their work helps shape policy, research, and discovery across a range of fields both in Australia and around the world.
I am proud to present a selection of such Australians in 2012 and bring an additional Australian perspective to what is arguably the capital of debate and discussion in the world – Washington DC.
HE The Hon Kim Beazley AC

Thursday 15 March at 6.30 pm Sport is an Australian obsession, entwined with ideas about climate, leisure, egalitarianism and national identity. Art, while not an Australian obsession, has often depicted sport as an icon of national character. But how are these three elements – art, sport, nation – linked historically? An exploration of art works from the Federation era will reveal the surprising role that art and sport played in shaping ideas about Australian nationhood in the late nineteenth century. |
