Job Description
The position is located in the Defence Materiel Branch (Washington) [DEFMAT(W)] of the Australian Department of Defence. DEFMAT(W) is responsible for the procurement of equipment, training, services and repairs from North American commercial suppliers and from the United States Department of Defense through Foreign Military Sales (FMS) arrangements under the United States Security Assistance Program. The position reports to a senior Procurement officer within DEFMAT(W). Travel to locations outside of the greater Washington area may need to be undertaken for the purposes of procurement business liaison and training.
Duty Statement
The position is responsible for the following duties under limited direction and with guidance as required and in accordance with Workplace Diversity, Occupational Health and Safety and Industrial Democracy principles and practices:
1. Procure goods and services of both a commercial (simple and complex) and/or Foreign Military Sales nature on behalf of the Australian Department of Defence. (50%)
2. Development and maintain good working relationships with customers and suppliers. (25%)
3. Exercise delegated financial commitment authority (10%)
4. Work closely with other DEFMAT(W) offices to resolve issues and provide guidance to Australian Department of Defence agencies. (10%)
5. Perform other duties as directed. (5%)
Selection Criteria
Applicants should ensure that both essential and desirable selection criteria are addressed.
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of procurement and contracting including the ability to interpret and apply Defence procurement legislation, policies, procedures, guidelines, practices and instructions.
2. Time management skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities in order to meet deadlines.
3. Ability to contribute productively and harmoniously as a member of a small team, as well as with stakeholders.
4. Ability to apply initiative within established procedures and protocols, and be relied upon to work independently to meet caseload requirements.
5. Well developed oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills to support a diverse customer base.
6. Demonstrated ability in standard office software, databases, web browsers, and email applications.
7. Commitment to training and learning to support achievement of objectives and career development.
8. Proficiency in Office software applications.
Desirable
9. Knowledge of Australian Department of Defence structure and interrelationships
