Born in Australia after 20 August 1986
If you were born in Australia after 20 August 1986 you are required to prove citizenship by providing specific documents with your application. This requirement is for anyone born in Australia after 20 August 1986 even if you currently hold an Australian passport or are now over the age of 18 and applying for your first adult passport.
You will either have to provide either:
- an Australian passport issued after 1 January 2000 that was valid for 2 years or more (normally this will be your current passport)
OR
- the applicant’s full Australian birth certificate and in addition to this proof of one of the parents citizenship at the time of the applicant’s birth. This proof of citizenship can be in the form of an Australian passport*, full Australian birth certificate, Australian citizenship certificate or proof of permanent resident status in Australia.
*A current Australian passport for either parent is not proof if it was not valid at the time of the applicant’s birth.
This requirement is for anyone born in Australia after 20 August 1986 even if you are now over the age of 18 and applying for your first adult passport.
